According to various sources, the gay community began shifting from Greenwich Village to Chelsea in the 1970's. The transition began with the quest for less expensive and larger living spaces, then led to the migration and establishment of gay-owned and gay-themed businesses. Today, 8th Avenue from 14th to 23rd Streets has an obvious gay presence. One of the oldest gay-owned businesses in the area is the clothing store, Camouflage, which has presided at 141 8th Avenue at 17th Street since 1976. |
These photographs were shot on 8th Ave during February, May and July, 2004. |
