HEADLINE: New Hub of Gay Life, New Attacks
According to Christine Quinn, the executive director of the New York City Gay and Lesbian Anti-Violence Project, during the first three months of 1997 there were 20 attacks on gay men and lesbians, compared to 12 attacks during the same period in 1996. In Greenwich Village during the same period the attacks dropped from 17 to 8.
Quinn stated that the attacks occurred during the night and the day, and on 8th Avenue, as well as the side streets. One incident involved a group of 10 attacking 2 men leaving a gay club. One of the men "was beaten so severely he had to have plastic surgery on his face." She added that men and women have been verbally harassed, as well as having been the target of objects hurled from moving vehicles.
